Who Shops for the Medical Staff?

Align Center
Do you ever wonder why no one has ever come up with the idea of making medical scrubs that actually fit a girl? I was visiting my friend in the hospital and, all I see are these poor women walking around in these ill fitting potato sack looking medical outfits! I think I noticed this because, I love clothes and would think someone would come up with better fitting attire for the medical staff! Then when I was online I came across this site that actually offer the best fitting medical scrubs! I think that the person who orders the medical uniforms for the hospital should take a look at this place! Come on now, professionals should look their best right? Medelita carries scrubs, and womens lab coats that are cut for the women in medicine!

The Outcome of My Garden!

Well, I have to say that my little inside garden is doing wonderful. I don't know if I talked about this or not but, I have to give the grow lights all the credit. I actually have some nice vegetables ripening as we speak! This is the month for our big Thanksgiving dinner and I will be able to use my home grown vegetables for the salad this year! I feel so accomplished and proud of myself! See, girl geeks can do more than just develop a website!

Buying baby clothes

So here's one thing I've learned about baby clothes: even in the same brand, sizes can vary. The exception is Circo, which is a brand of baby clothing and toddler clothing that Target carries. Most of what my four year old and two year old wear is Circo, and whether it's pants, shirts, undershirts or socks, the sizes are always consistent.

Generally speaking, better brands of baby clothes will run true to size. More importantly, they are made of high quality materials, so they will last.

Where do you shop for baby clothes?

Shopping on a Budget!

I have been contemplating on what to buy this year for the holidays. I have to get my act together and start a list. I have a ton of people to buy for but, it looks like this year like a lot of people out there are going to be on a budget. I just wanted to get something really nice for my husband. The most important person in my life deserves something special. I was so excited when I came across these mens wedding rings made of tungsten and silver. It is just gorgeous and I know he would love it. So, this is what I'm thinking, it's very affordable and, looks like a million bucks! Now how could I go wrong? He's going to be so surprised! I can't wait for the holidays!

Trying my mouth at voice recognition

So I'm annoyed. I'm sitting here messing with some new voice recognition software that I'm trying out (I love doing product reviews on In My Bag; I get so many free goods to try out!), and I put a little too much weight on my keyboard drawer (read: more than the weight of one hand), and the left side of the drawer pops out of the track. The screw is gone, and I'm thinking I vacuumed it up several weeks ago, because I didn't know what it was ... oops.

Anyway, the dictation works. I'm kind of choppy/awkward with it, because I'm used to my thoughts whirling around in my head and my fingers flying over the keys of the keyboard. I am not used to piecing together everything in sentence form and then speaking it verbally. But I have several assignments on wedding favors, promotional items and business design to work on, so I'm definitely going to grasp it so I can use my mouth more and my hands less.

Well, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to read my favorite celeb trashing site, Perez Hilton!

Let Grow Lights Grow Your Garden!

If your anything like me I can't seem to grow indoor plants for the life of me! I have tried everything, from water, fertilizer, placing them in the window. I don't know they just keep dying on me. The poor plants look like I have neglected them! Maybe its the atmosphere in the kitchen. The lighting in there isn't good, and, I think maybe the smell of my cooking is killing them! Ha! Anyway, my neighbor suggested that I don't water as often and, to invest some grow lights. So, I think this is what I'm going to do, hey, its worth a try right?

Baby Clothes That Make Me Happy!

How many times have you gone to the mall looking for something different and, everything looks the same? Without having the right kind of buyers for stores can be a real problem. If you have the same person with the same taste buying each year for a particular store, you will more than likely see the same sort of clothing time and time again!
With this said, I am looking more and more at designer clothing for woman, men and designer baby clothes on-line for my family. These speciality stores give you items to choose from that are usually hand picked with attention to style color and quality.

I have a few children to buy for and, I want them to have childrens clothes that reflects their own personality! I usually buy what is new for the season but, watch for particular mix and match pieces that can be integrated into the rest of their existing wardrobe.
A few of the designer that I have bought over and over would be Flowers by Zoe, Roxy and, Quiksilver. They stay true to quality of the garment and, always have new and interesting pieces that add flair to my kid's clothing style.
Don't you think that the way your children dresses says something about who bought them the clothing they wear? I would have to agree with this. I like my kids to look good, in style and, own clothing that makes them feel good. Because, when they look good, they feel good about themselves, and, that makes me a happy mom!

Change of season means more baby clothes

So, fall is officially here. Yay! I love fall. The autumn season has always been a favorite of mine. It used to be that fall was something I associated with starting a new year of school, going back, something new, something fresh. But since 2000, I have happily associated fall with the beginning of my relationship with my husband, Daniel. We went on our first date on August 16th, 2000, but because he was leaving the area for his first year of college, I didn't see him after August 22nd, not again until mid-September. The following year I took tour buses and trains out to Pittsburgh to visit him, and the year after that I moved with him to Pittsburgh. Oh, and two years after that our daughter was born. And lastly, the year after THAT we conceived our son. For those still playing along, that's 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005. ;)

Alyssa is all ready for the fall. She really hasn't grown too much since last year (just upwards!), so all of her pants from last year fit her just fine. She inherited my short legs, so at least this year most of her jeans won't be dragging the ground. I seriously have to roll up the cuffs on 90% of her pants. It's ridiculous!

Ryan, on the other hand, not so ready.... he has new shirts, about ten of them. But he needs pants. I wasn't sure what size pants he had leftover from last year, so I decided to wait on buying new ones until I checked out his drawers. Well, I went through them yesterday, and he's down to one pair of jeans and two pairs of cargo pants. Ridiculous! That kid grows too much. He was wearing 24mo/2T in the summer of 2007, here we are in the fall of 2008 and 5T fits him now. In comparison, Alyssa is wearing 5T loosely, and she's almost two years older than him. Well, that's my chunky baby.

So guess who has to go shopping for more baby clothes. Or should I say toddler clothes, since there's nothing really BABY about a whopping 5 in toddler sizes!

Psst... anyone else who has a horse-sized toddler like mine, check out eBay for onesies. I found a bunch (new! in packaging!) by Gerber that are 4T! I'm stoked!

Wedding favors on the brain

You know, my poor sleep (going to bed late, waking up in the middle of the night, getting up early with the kids, napping during the day) didn’t start after having kids. It started after working from home.

When our daughter was born, I worked second shift, as did my husband. It was easy to keep our daughter on a schedule with us.
After our son was born, I learned very quickly to sleep when he slept. I coordinated the kids’ nap times so that Ryan was going down for a nap not long after Alyssa was waking up, and she was going down for her nap when Ryan was taking his second. At night, Ryan would go to bed by 9, and Alyssa would be bed at 10.

Nowadays, the problem isn’t getting the kids to nap and sleep at night, but getting myself to sleep. After they go to sleep, I all too often take advantage of the quiet to do my writing and research on wedding favors or whatever else I need to look up ezinearticles.com about. Like now. It’s 3am and I’m working. The kids will be up at 10. *cry*

Having a baby? Time to go shopping!

I think one of the most exciting things to shop for is a new pet or a new baby. I recently got a pug (four months old, female, beautiful, very well behaved and well mannered), and shopping for her was a lot of fun. But there's only so much to shop for for a dog. A baby, on the other hand, requires a lot of preparation! Baby furniture is just the tip of the iceberg, and even that is a lot. Cribs, playpens, strollers, car seats, high chairs... then there are the optional things like slings, baby swings, cradles, bassinets. But the fun stuff, the REALLY fun stuff, are the baby clothes, diapers, bibs, towels, and accessories like pacifiers, diaper bags and diapering essentials, breastfeeding supplies, toys and musical CDs.

When you think about it, it's amazing that there are literally thousands of items to buy for a new baby. I know we spent a decent chunk of change and time on new baby things for Alyssa. With our second child, we didn't have to get the big things, but we needed a lot of new designer baby clothing, since we were having a boy, and obviously he wouldn't look too good in pink or purple. ;)

What was your favorite baby purchase?

I miss Pittsburgh

Go Steelers! My husband and I lived in Pittsburgh for a little under two years. Actually, he lived there for three and a half years -- he moved there for college in August of 2000, and I joined him in August of 2002. We moved back home a year and a half later, just a few days before Christmas (yes, driving a uhaul from one end of the state to the other during the mad last minute holiday rush was INSANE. I promise we'll never repeat it!).

I loved Pittsburgh. It's going on five years since we left that city, and I still miss it. City life is a pain and expensive, but it's convenient and it's definitely quaint. Of course, I think I reflect more upon my memories of my husband and I together more than I do about the city, but it's still very special to me, and I would like to go back to visit.

One thing that really got me about Pittsburgh was the borderline RABIDNESS people had in terms of enthusiasm for football and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Pittsburgh Pirates got some attention, but NOTHING like what the Steelers got. You would think it was an official holiday, the way people would dress up in nfl jerseys. The freakin' stores would even decorate, and employees (I worked at a K-Mart and a Target) would be strongly encouraged to wear the team colors (black and yellow).

Football never has been my thing, nor will it ever be. My husband enjoys it somewhat, so I'm thinking of getting him some kind of official jersey. I might even get a youth NFL jersey for our son, so they can dress up and be all GO TEAM! together.

And so it begins

This year, my daughter will be attending preschool. Next year it'll be preschool again, and the year after that, kindergarten. My husband seems to think that back-to-school shopping consists of buying a new backpack, getting new sneakers and a hair cut, maybe a new jacket for the fall, and some school supplies.

HAH. He's in for a real treat. Sure, our daughter will be getting all of that... and then some! Back to school shopping is all about new fall clothes. I did it all throughout my childhood and teen years, and my daughter will too. Only my mom made me shop for new clothes at K-Mart and the like (but still, five or six pairs of jeans and three or four tops can quickly add up!), and I can definitely see my daughter wanting only the best and demanding designer kids clothes. And sucker that I am for everything fashionable, I'll probably give in. God help our checkbook!

I love having a girl to dress in childrens clothes!

The best part of having a daughter is being able to dress her up in all of the great little girls clothing! I have a son as well, and I must admit that the selection of boys outfits is never as nice as what I can find for girls! Don't get me wrong, I can find nice childrens clothes for both of my kids, but the good boy stuff is few and far between. My biggest complaint with boys clothing is that everything is dark and dreary, camouflage or sports themed, or plastered with tacky illustrations and television and movie characters. Is it so wrong to want to dress your little boy is nice, sweet little boy apparel?

Now girls clothes on the other hand... a walk in the park! Last week alone I was able to find my daughter a pair of metallic silver jeans, dark blue denim jeans with silver sparkles all over them, and some great tights in the baby clothes section at Babies 'r Us.

Where do you shop for clothing for your children? I know that Gymboree and The Children's Place are often recommended, but there have to be some other nice stores as well! I love Carters clothing, but sadly their sizes don't go beyond babies!

Childrens clothes on sale right now!

If the barrage of commercials on your TV and the aisles stocked sky high with pencils and binders haven't clued you in, it's back to school time! This means that it's time to stock up on school friendly snacks, batteries for alarm clocks, school supplies and... new clothes! Sandbox Couture has a terrific sale going on right now for their childrens clothes. The back to school sale offers you some great deals on a lot of clothes.

My favorite pick for girls heading back to school this fall is the Small Paul Frank Pink "Wanda" jacket. Red and pink plaid complete with pockets topped with stylish pink bows is a must have to match with dark denim jeans and corduroy skirts. Take advantage of the current back to school sale and save 15%!

I never got to shop for bridesmaids gifts

I am the first to admit that my wedding was not what I thought it would be. As a child and young teen, I imagined a traditional wedding. What I got was a justice of peace wedding. It was out of necessity -- I was pregnant. And not just a bit pregnant, but VERY pregnant. My husband and I married exactly seventeen days prior to the due date of our first child, our now almost four year old daughter Alyssa. Needless to say, we didn't choose to have such a rushed, informal wedding. We had gotten engaged in August of 2001, and planned on having a late summer or fall wedding in 2005 or 2006. My pregnancy with Alyssa was unexpected, but we wanted to be married before she was born, so we moved things up and tied the knot the quick and somewhat tacky way -- in front of a judge.

I don't regret marrying my husband. I do regret the timing, and hope to someday have a "real" wedding. I can only imagine how exciting it would be to have a wedding wishlist and countdown on Wedding Wire, and to pick out the perfect bridesmaids gifts. Oh well. All in due time, I'm sure.

Technology & Wedding Planning!

I know that a lot of weddings are held this time of year, but, that doesn't mean I'm getting married! Maybe someday down the road, I will have my dream wedding! Including all the work that goes into it! From choosing the rings, wedding dress, flowers, and, Bridesmaids Gifts! I know the list could go on forever! No wonder people plan wedding sometimes years in advance! With the help of online shopping, I think the technology has helped tremendously in planning weddings. Who knows maybe by then you can literally do your entire wedding from behind the computer screen!

Fog machines are neat

coolstuffcheap.com has some really, REALLY neat stuff. I can think of many scenarios where their fog machines and lava lamps would be perfect: dorm rooms, a teenager's room, even my three year old daughter's room (well, the lava lamp). A fog machine is a great thing to have at parties, particularly themed and Halloween parties.

The company also carries neon clocks. These are things you don't see except in bars, retro restaurants and in music videos. If you like these clocks, definitely check out coolstuffcheap.com!

Save money when shopping for baby clothes

So, here is my secret for shopping for baby clothes for two toddlers without breaking the bank: shop between seasons. It sounds like a strange thing to do, to wait until the end of summer before buying summer clothes, but I promise you you'll save a lot of money, and here's why: stores push the season merchandise before the season begins. This means that by the time summer is nearing an end, the retailers need to get the fall and winter clothes out on the floor. So they clearance all of the summer merchandise to get it out of the way.

Shopping between seasons for baby clothes and childrens clothes works with retail stores, specialty boutiques, and online stores like sandboxcouture.com. They key is waiting for the right time. For spring and summer clothes, check out stores in July and August. For winter clothing, check out stores in March and April.

By shopping between seasons, you'll save as much as 75% on clothes! Here's an example of what I picked up last week: four pairs of toddler girls' shorts, four tank tops, and two pairs of toddler boys' shorts. Guess how much I spent? Ready for it? $30. That's right. $30! Thanks to the items being on clearance, I spent an average of $3 per item. These clothes are normally priced anywhere from $3.99 to $12.99 each. :)

He's almost two!

My son turns two on Saturday. I would be lying if I said that these past two years haven't gone by fast. I know a lot of moms often lament that the baby and toddler days seem to drag and drag, but for me they really flew. Of course, having a busy life and another child assisted with that. My son has a sister who is going to be four in October. I also work from home. And since my son's birth, we have moved twice, dealt with a lot of family drama and changes, and have kept busy doing family things. For instance, in the last seven weeks we have gone swimming at least a dozen times, gone mini-golfing four times, have seen three movies (Hancock, Wall-E and Dark Knight), celebrated three birthdays, went to an amusement park, and went on vacation to the NJ shore.

So, two. What do two year old little boys want for their birthday? That's the question I have been getting from family and friends, and I'm having a heck of a time figuring out the answer. I mentioned clothes and/or gift certificates to a few people, simply because my son is going to need fall and winter clothing. His age really hit me then: two. Two means no more baby clothes. Two means shopping in the little boys section, graduating from 4T and 5T to x-small and 4/5.

Moms, let me tell you: the baby and toddler years go by very quickly. Make sure to stop and enjoy the little moments of them!

One of these days

In April of 2004, I realized that my engagement ring was cracked. Specifically, the band at the very bottom, at its thinnest part, had cracked through entirely. I made plans that week to call up a jeweler to find out how much it would cost to have the ring repaired, but I never got around to it.

Oh hi. Four and a half years later, and the ring is still damaged. It isn’t an issue, except the one or two times I have managed to somehow yank the engagement ring, and the two separate pieces close around and pinch my finger. Do you have ANY idea how painful that is?! Let me tell you, painful. The one incident happened in June of 2005, and I still remember the pain quite vividly, heh.

So yeah, I need to get my butt in groove and call up a jeweler. There’s a local one that advertises free repairs for mens wedding bands and womens wedding bands, so maybe he/she does engagement rings too?

mamabebe.com

Whenever I know of someone who is pregnant, my first thought is of what type of baby gift to get them. I love giving personalized baby gifts, because personalized ones are unique and stand out from the rest. Diaper bags, high chairs, boxes of diapers and onesies are always nice, but what about personalized piggy banks and other keepsakes? Those are definitely unique gifts that won't be soon forgotten.

mamabebe.com is a baby apparel and baby gift website that has all sorts of baby things. You should definitely check them out!

The Baby Borrowers

I just finished watching The Baby Borrowers. The show has a really neat concept: set up a teenage couple in a house and hand them a baby to watch for a period of three days. The house was completely furnished with regular furniture, baby furniture and food, and once the teens got their clothes and such unpacked, their child was brought in. Obviously there were safeguards in place: a nanny available 24/7 to shadow if need be, and the parents themselves could watch what was happening in the house at all times, from another house right across the street. But generally, the teen couples were on their own with their charges.

So this week's episode featured toddlers. I can definitely sympathize with the frustration level some of the teens experienced. Toddlers ARE frustrating. And yeah, they sleep 10 - 14 hours straight, rather than the horrible little cat naps that tiny babies do, but they are SO much more active during the day.

Heh, I think this is my new favorite show. Have you seen it?

Thursday night ramblings

I have to pee. I'm thirsty. I'm desperately craving chocolate. But I don't feel like getting up, my glass isn't within reach, and there's no chocolate in the house, and my mom has my car so I can't even go out to buy chocolate. Le sigh.

Alyssa is up. She slept late today and didn't come stumbling out until almost noon. I need to hurry up and get her into bed though, because tomorrow morning we all have to be up and ready to go out the door when Dan needs to leave for work, and that's at 11am. We need to leave a few minutes earlier, so that Dan has the time to grab his check and take it to the bank. Since we've all been sleeping in, getting up at 9:30am (me) and 10:15am (kids) is going to suck. But, sigh, we'll deal, somehow!

So, what does everyone have planned for the weekend? I plan on taking a part of my paycheck and shopping for mens rings, and paying bills. For the rings, I'm looking at titanium, but I also like tungsten rings. I know, I'm so exciting. ;)

I'll pass on the lights, thanks

If you want to excite me, take me to Target. I love that I can get almost everything we need from there. The only exception is plus-size clothing for me (I'll take Fashion Bug any time!) and food beyond the basic gallon of milk, loaf of bread or frozen pizza. I'd say that 99% of Alyssa's clothing and 100% of Ryan's clothing came from Target. I buy socks for myself at Target, and all of my husband's clothes from Target.

Now, if you want to bore me to tears, drag me to a hardware store like Home Depot. Nothing will put me to sleep faster than lumber, paint, plumbing, commercial lighting and carpet swatches. Though I try to make the most of the time there and keep myself lively by checking out some of the neat gadgets they'll often have near the cash registers.

What is your favorite store?

Enough with the baby bedding

So I had been yapping about a neighborhood yard sale that was held on June 28th. I had every intention of participating, but I was so wiped out from our vacation, driving home and getting settled back in at home (we came home on Thursday evening; the 28th was a Saturday morning) that I skipped it. In hindsight, I should have put a bunch of stuff (baby bedding, baby toys, a few infant outfits) outside with a donation box and let the neighborhood have at it. But I didn't. And now the stuff is still in my house. And I'm sure that half the neighborhood is pissed with me for not doing my part and turning out with crap to sell. Oh well. The downside is that every time I look at the baby stuff I want more babies!

To be honest, we have lived here for a little over a year, and aside from the people on either side of our house, I have no desire to really meet and mingle with anyone else. Not the guy across the road who we had an issue with over a basketball hoop, not the woman next door to him who bellows like an enraged yak for her teenage boys, and not the family on the other side, the husband who is very nice (he helped my brothers and I push my mom's stalled mini-van down the road) but the wife who stares daggers at me every time she sees me (apparently me leaving a plate of cookies on their porch as a way of saying "Thanks for helping me push a mini-van!" is synonymous with, "Hi, can I steal your husband?" ), or the other parents of cretins whom they never take responsibility for.

I'll just keep on being that snobbish, uppity neighbor that I'm sure everyone thinks I am. :P

Tungsten rings

Since titanium-jewelry.com has a coupon good for $25 worth of savings floating around (use coupon code CS25 to get yours!), I'm checking out some tungsten rings for my husband. He has expressed some interest in black titanium and tungsten. I think I like the tungsten personally.

titanium-jewelry.com

In addition to black titanium and tungsten rings, titanium-jewelry.com also has a huge amount of jewelry available in regular titanium. They carry rings for men and women, necklaces, bracelets and other accessories.

No trespassing!

When I was a kid, I never had to think twice about not touching property that wasn't my own. From the time I was very young, it was drilled into my head that it was absolutely unacceptable to venture on someone else's property or touch property belonging to someone else, unless I had their direct permission.
I'm obviously grown now, but those teachings have stuck with me, influenced me, and are now being handed down to my children. My daughter knows that she is not allowed to touch another child's toy or go onto the property of any of our neighbors unless she was specifically invited to.

But so many kids are missing this crucial lesson. A prime example is the neighborhood where my grandfather's home is at. Twice this year his flood lights have been shattered, and I know that it's irritating, misbehaving kids or even teens that are responsible for it. My mom and I make attempts to drive by and check on the home at least twice a week, but unfortunately we've never caught the jerk(s) in the act.

Sometimes I really worry about how the children of today and tomorrow are being raised. So many parents don't want to crack down on their kids for the basic things -- such as staying off the property of others, not vandalizing or trespassing, etc. If these little but common sense things are being overlooked, what does that say for the big things?

Save money at titanium-jewelry.com!

Every now and again I post about titanium-jewelry.com. Well now I'm back and blogging about them again! As you may know, Titanium Jewelry is a leading company in the titanium and tungsten jewelry market. They also have jewelry available in black titanium and even palladium. They carry a large, high quality selection of mens wedding bands and womens wedding bands, but they have plenty of other jewelry as well, including bracelets, necklaces, earrings and accessories for men (cuff links and the like).

Titanium rings, reading

I want to do something special for my husband. While we both work and probably log equal amount of hours most weeks (yes, I am that busy working from home!), his job is much more physically demanding than mine, and definitely more stressful. Plus there's the driving time to and from work, and I know how much he hates to drive.

I have one idea in mind, but it would take a lot of planning, and a significant amount of money. It's something I hope to pull off by the end of the summer. I'm so tempted to just jump and do it this weekend, but unfortunately those pesky little things known as "bills" always want to be paid first.

Today has been a really quiet day. I did some blogging, started a new book (check out my Good Reads to see what's on my reading list!), read some of the confessions at True Mom Confessions, and did a bit of research on titanium rings for a writing project I wrapped up just a little bit ago.

I need to get geared up for July and then August! Ack! Summer is just whizzing by. My son's second birthday is in two weeks, and then we have a swim party to plan for on August 5th. Whew!

Quality mens wedding bands

When my husband and I planned on marrying, one of the last things we did was go shopping for wedding bands. It was easy enough to find a wedding band for myself, as the selection of womens wedding bands was impressive. But finding a wedding band for my husband turned out to be a bit more challenging. We did finally find one, but not without a lot of hassle and running around.

I wish that we had known about titanium-jewelry.com. Their selection of mens wedding bands is incredible. Better yet, not only are these rings very stylish and well made, but they're also affordable! Many of the mens wedding bands available cost less than our monthly car payment!

While titanium-jewelry.com's specialty is titanium, there are also mens wedding bands, rings and other types of jewelry available in tungsten, black titanium and palladium. Styles range from classic to contemporary, with solo rings, sets, and even tension sets.

I am so freaking busy

I am really, really tired. I'm working on some research at Wikipedia, looking up info on msn wedding bands, and writing up a few content articles. I'd wait to do this tomorrow, but I know that I'm going to be busy tomorrow. We're having a party for July 4th (Happy 4th everyone!), and we're also going to be celebrating my brother's thirteenth birthday party. I'm not sure if my husband will be at the party (we're fighting: he slept on the couch last night, we fought again this morning, had a little car/key drama, and he went home to his brother's tonight), but my mom, grandfather, two brothers, and my friend Jason will be there. And the kidlets, of course. :)

My brother is going to freak when he finds out what one of his birthday presents are. I can't wait to see the look on his face!!!

July is moving fast already. I sent out birthday invitations for Ryan's second birthday a week ago: the party is on the 26th. I also reserved a two hour slot at a local pool for a private night party on August 5th. We're inviting both our families and some friends. It's going to be LOADS of fun!

Bra stabbings

I bought a new bra today from Lane Bryant. It's a lacy underwire style. I really like it. I actually bought two -- one in black and one in light pink. The bra rocks, but the side underwire is a little high, so it's jabbing into my arm. Boo. Oh well.

I'm so sleepy right now. Since the beach, we have been getting up by 10am, so of course by the time midnight rolls around, I'm getting really sleepy! Oh well, bedtime soon. Once I finish work and boot my mom and brothers out, of course.

I feel good today, in terms of house work. I stripped the crib bedding from Ryan's Pack 'n Play and washed it, swept, vacuumed and mopped, and clean out the air filters of all four of our AC units. Ah. Bliss. It feels SO good to be caught up on housework!

How we spent our stimulus

I really wanted to pick up some new residential lighting with our stimulus check. We need more landscaping lights, I wanted to put in ceiling fans and lights in our bedroom and the living room, and I wanted a better light in our kitchen.

But fortunately/unfortunately, our stimulus went elsewhere -- vehicle registration renewal ($36, ouch!), gift for an online friend, belated birthday present for me, game (Guitar Hero 4 for PS3) and online game renewal for my husband, household supplies, gas, and an extravagant dinner with my husband's brothers at Texas Roadhouse.

Oh well. Here's to hoping that our 2008 tax return will cover both central air conditioning and some better lighting in here. :)

How did you spend your stimulus check? Also, check out How I Spent My Stimulus and add your own contribution!

Personalized baby clothes from smarteepantsclothing.com

My son’s second birthday is on July 26th, 2008. We’re having a birthday party for him, and will be inviting our families and a few close friends (oh hai Jason, Danielle, Matt!). While we all know he’s the special birthday boy, I would love to put him in something cute that makes him stand out.

I’m checking out Smartee Pants Clothing, and I’m thinking I have a few ideas. But my favorite idea so far is the personalized crown tee:

The personalized crown tee features a navy blue crown on a white or baby blue t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt. The name can be customized to reflect anything you’d like. In our case, we would put Ryan, or even Birthday Boy. Sizes range from 3/6mo to size 8.

In addition to the personalized crown tee, Smartee Pants Clothing has many other personalized baby, child, adult and maternity wear, in a variety of colors, sizes and styles. Many items come with crystals and rhinstones on them, and all items are made right here in the USA.

Thinking about checking out SmarteePantsClothing.com? Don’t forget to look over their new items, onesies and diaper covers, and take advantage of the cheap flat rate shipping fee!

Smartee Pants Clothing

Smartee Pants Clothing is a cute online clothing store. They carry sassy clothing and sassy accessories for babies, toddlers, children, teens, adults and pregnant women! Their products consist of designer baby clothes that are perfect for everyday outfits, or to give as gifts to moms-to-be and kids. If you’re looking for a gift, look no further than the Mommy and Me sets, gifts for brides, gifts for older siblings, and gifts for the new baby too!

Smartee Pants Clothing has a lot to offer, but I think my two favorite items are the diaper covers and the cupcake birthday shirt. The cupcake birthday shirt is perfect for any little girl who is celebrating a birthday! It comes in white or pink, short-sleeved or long-sleeved, and comes in sizes ranging from 6-12mo to 8! In addition to a beautiful crystal cupcake on the shirt, you can add the birthday’s girl name in red, lime green, aquamarine or pink!

My little secret about baby shower favors

So here is my dirty little secret: I didn’t have a baby shower, for either of my children. My pregnancy with Alyssa was unexpected, so we didn’t even tell most people until a few months after I first found out I was pregnant with her (the exception being my mom and my husband’s mom). And then we were busy trying to get situated financially and find a bigger place to live in, so the discussion of having a baby shower never came up.

Sometimes, when I check out baby shower favors, I feel bad that I never got to experience the fun of a coordinated and scheduled party to celebrate my pregnancy and upcoming baby. But most of the time, it really doesn’t bother me. I may have not enjoyed a baby shower, but both my husband and I had our families rally around us, and be very supportive of us. And we still got plenty of baby gifts.

Did you have a baby shower?

First birthday planning was simple!

Planning my son’s first birthday was a breeze. Before he was born I had been hooked on Classic Pooh, so it made perfect sense to use Classic Pooh for his first birthday party.

But this year has been tougher. Despite my son being my youngest, my baby, he’s turning two, and so those adorable, cuddly little birthday party themes that are so perfect for a first birthday aren’t really appropriate for a second birthday.

Did I mention that my son’s birthday is in a month and six days? Last night I FINALLY settled on a theme:

It’s a good thing that everyone who is invited already knows of the date the party will be on, since you should send out the birthday party invitations at least six weeks in advance! At this rate they’ll be getting them three weeks prior to the party. Oops! Oh well, at least the invitations will be on their way.

Who needs a yard sale?

Last month several flyers were put up in the neighborhood, advertising a community yard sale on June 28th. As much as I’d like to participate, I don’t think I’m going to be up to it. I wouldn’t mind adding some baby clothes, toys and household items to the other items and bassinets that my neighbors are getting together, but we’re leaving for a three day vacation at the New Jersey shore on Tuesday morning, and will be returning on Thursday night. The next two days will be spent catching up on housework, taking care of the cats (eep: note to self: CALL MOM ABOUT CHECKING ON THE CATS!) and doing laundry. Then, on Sunday, Dan and I are going to Dorney Park.

June is really turning out to be a busy month!

A very nice birthday

My 24th birthday was on June 13th. I still can’t believe I’m 24. It’s weird to say. Oh well. I go through this every year. I think the hardest jump was from 19 to 20. Suddenly I was two decades old, and let me tell you, that was depressing.

But hey, I lived. Here I am, one year closer to thirty. Dan is ahead of me with only four years to go, bwahahaha, sucks to be him!

I got a lot of nice things for my birthday, though three of them are on order/IOUs. Dan got me a gift bag full of relaxing items (perfume, bath salts, a book, and a few other odds and ends), my brothers gave me a book (everyone knows I love to read!), my brothers-in-law gave me a 320GB laptop hard drive (ordered — it should be here any day now! *crosses fingers*), and Dan is getting me a new car stereo for my car. When we get our stimulus payment (it’s scheduled to be mailed out on June 27th!!!), he also wants to get me a mother’s ring. ♥ So I didn’t get any titanium rings for my birthday, but that’s okay. Titanium is on the expensive side, anyway. Just stick to my wishlistr, and you’re good!

La la la... golf!

I never thought I’d be one to really like mini-golf. As a kid, I played it once or twice and then quickly got bored of it. But I guess you see things differently as an adult. Last week I went mini-golfing with my husband, his two brothers and two sisters. Since there were six of us, it definitely took a while to get around the eighteen hole course. We had a lot of fun though, even if we weren’t that good. We all gave it our best shot, and amazingly all of us each scored a hole in one. Dan was funny: he was all about form, technique, knowing the right golf equipment to use, etc., etc. The rest of us just gave the ball a good whack! I suppose our scores reflected that, since Dan beat all of us.

Oh well. The point is to have fun! And I am improving. I think my score was 63 that day. Dan and I went mini-golfing with Jason on Wednesday night, and my score was 61. Last night I went with my mom and brothers, and my score was 58! It just goes to show you, you DO get better with practice.

I need better internet

Tonight is just one of those nights where I feel like screaming and punching something. My mom and I made plans for me to watch my brothers while she took my grandfather out to lunch. After that, they would come over here, and all of us would have time to get together and socialize.
The plan went all to hell, of course. My mom didn't even drop the boys off until around 4pm, so of course it was much later when she made the 35 minute drive to get my grandfather and take him to lunch -- which wound up being dinner.
At 6:30, she calls to tell me that it's too late to bring him over tonight, and that she was on her way to take him home, and then she'd be back.
It's now going on 10pm, and she isn't back. She should have been here two hours ago. I'm really upset, because this isn't the first time she's done this to me. I had plans tonight, but of course they'll fall through, because we have only one car (my mom is borrowing mine) and there isn't enough room to cram four kids (two of whom are in car seats) and two adults into it.

And Comcast is acting up. As usual. I'm so tempted to switch to a satellite internet provider and be done with Failcast once and for all.

T-Mobile is pissing me the heck off right now too. I can't get onto the secure area of the site to pay my grandfather's cell phone bill.

This is just NOT my night!

Caring for baby bedding

As you undoubtedly know, baby bedding is not cheap to buy. So when you do have a nice crib set for your baby, you'll want to do everything you can to take care of it. When it comes time to toss your baby bedding in the laundry pile, use the following tips to take good care of it:

  • use a natural or gentle detergent, such as Dreft or Clorox Natural

  • never use bleach

  • wash baby bedding on cold, gentle cycles

  • wash the items with like colors and materials

  • line dry or flat dry blankets, comforters, dust ruffles and crib bumpers

By the following these tips, as well as any that are listed on the tags attached, you're ensuring that your baby bedding will be around and in excellent condition for many years to come.

Needed: birthday party ideas

It's so easy to find 1st birthday party ideas. See what I mean? There are hundreds of quality websites that have birthday party ideas, themes and supplies for first birthdays, but what about second birthdays? My son is turning two, and I'm stumped for what birthday theme to use. I think at this rate I'm going to have to check out Party City and pray that they have something cute that isn't too generic or overused! Wish me luck!

Trying to decide on good baby gifts

My son's second birthday is just a little over a month away. I haven't even settled on a theme for his party, what type of cake to have, what food to serve, and if the party should be indoors or outdoors (I'm leaning more towards in, simply because it's summertime and I hate to sweat!). So when people call/email me to ask for ideas for baby gifts for Ryan, I'm stumped. I don't even know what I'm getting him, and I'm his mother! How am I supposed to help you out?

Last year Ryan received a few toys, some clothes and a $50 gift card from his uncles. Honestly, that was the best gift at all. Boring for a child to open up (though at a year of age, he was more interested in gnawing on wrapping paper and flicking the bows than he was with opening and admiring his new presents), but awesome for a parent! I went shopping the next day and got him several outfits for the fall, and even found an adorable little skirt for his sister, too.

What do you think of gift cards as gifts? My husband thinks they're tacky, lazy gifts. I think they're awesome!

Baby clothes shopping

I like to shop. A lot. Prior to having kids, I loved to shop for clothes, makeup, jewelry, hair accessories, stationery, and car accessories. Now that I have kids and a household to manage, my priorities for shopping have changed. After groceries comes household necessities (cleansers and paper products), and then baby clothes for my daughter and son (who are both in 5T, so soon we'll be moving into the little kids' clothes! Ack!), then things for my husband, and finally, if there's money and energy left over, a few odds and ends for myself.

Where do I love to shop? Target and Fashion Bug. I ♥ those stores!

Selling baby bedding at a yard sale

Someone organized a yard sale in our neighborhood. It's being held on June 28th. If we're here (my husband's aunt and uncle invited us to join them at the NJ shore during the week of the 22nd-28th), I'm going to hopefully have some things to sell! Not so much because I want to stand outside in the disgusting heat and deal with bugs and maybe make ten or twenty dollars, but because it's nice to participate in neighborly events. We have lived here for over a year, and we know the people on either side of us. That's it.

So, I need to dig up some things to sell! I have some baby bedding left over from when Ryan was still using his crib, a hot sling that I really should part with, and of course, toys, books, arts and crafts stuff -- all the typical kiddie stuff you'll find most moms and dads selling during yard sales and flea market events!

What do you sell at yard sales? And what was your best find at a yard sale?

My choice of crib bedding

My favorite crib bedding is Classic Pooh. When I was pregnant with my son, the Classic Pooh frenzy started with a few adorable items I saw in Target. When my husband and I created a baby wish list, we chose all sorts of Classic Pooh items. When the baby gifts from friends and gift swaps arrived, they were Classic Pooh. And when we decorated our son’s room and went shopping for curtains, wall decals and a crib dust ruffle, we made sure to match everything to his Classic Pooh crib bedding.

What baby crib bedding themes do you like?

Consignments don't always save you money

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I found a consignment shop in our area. They had a lot of nice stuff, but I quickly found out that you don't always save as much money at a consignment shop as you think you do! Oh, I got some good deals --a very nice changing table for $25, an L.L.Bean bunting bag for $10, and various articles of clothing, books and videos for just a few dollars apiece.

But they wanted a hundred dollars or more for used bassinets with visible wear and tear on them. I'm sorry, but I'm not paying $125 for a bassinet with frayed edges, when I can pick up a lower end new one for $200 or less! And some of their clothes...oy. I'd find shirts for $5 and $6, and pants for $12 - $15. Newsflash: you can get clothes BRAND NEW for those prices. Granted, they'd be Target and the like, rather than Gap... but used Gap clothing or brand new Target clothing? Used clothes that you're paying for the brand name in order to have, or brand new?

The choice should be clear!

Home Grown Vegetables

My closest friend has always had a green thumb and though we share just about all common interests until recently we differed on home gardening. I had never really given any type of gardening any thought and had always viewed her passion for this as a waste of time. Things changed recently however when I found out that I could save quite a bit of money by growing my own vegetables.

Being a vegetarian my diet consists mostly of earth grown foods and with the price of veggies rising and becoming over inflated my girlfriend approached me and told me that she was going to begin growing her own vegetables both to save a few dollars and to get a better quality product. I was interested though my motivation was solely saving money. I found myself dreading working in her indoor garden but I was surprised at how much fun I was having.

Perhaps it was because I was spending more time with her and perhaps it was because I was learning something new but I began looking forward to the three days a week that I was spending in the greenhouse. As I began to get a hold on gardening and working with different types of soils and plants, I was surprised to find there was so much more to it than simply throwing seeds into the ground and watering things.

Several of her grow lights went out within my first couple of visits. I didn’t think these lights were important but my assumption was quickly refuted by my girlfriend when she explained that these types of lights are designed specifically to help plants grow. I actually spent one day of my first week hunting down specific types of commercial lighting for the greenhouse. The lights she wanted were fairly expensive but we went halves on the cost as I felt as though we were becoming partners in gardening.

Once the new lights were installed we got back to the ground work. Three weeks later I was pleased to see the bell peppers I planted on my own begin to sprout. It was at that point that I admitted to both myself and my girlfriend that I was enjoying doing garden work. Not long after that the rest of our first batch of vegetables sprouted and some even ripened and were ready to be eaten.

I’ll say this about growing your own food. It’s hard work and it takes time to grow these things however the flavor and even the size of the vegetables far outclass anything you find in the store. In addition to this, home grown vegetables contain no unnatural preservatives and go into your kitchen fresh; no weeks of shipping are involved. This experience leads me to believe that I will never buy vegetables from any store again.

For those of you who have never eaten anything homegrown, you need to at least once. Once you decide to go this route you’re in for a treat and I can guarantee that you too will begin growing your own vegetables. Before I became a vegetarian I had eaten a steak that came from a cow raised by my friend. This was much like vegetables in that the homegrown food was far better than any store bought product. Though it takes care and effort to grow your own food, the work is worth it. Your body and your bank account will thank you for it!

Looking For A New Home

I never thought that buying a new home would be so difficult. Being married and this being not just my wife’s but my first home purchase as well, I figured all it would involve would be looking at a few homes and then deciding which one felt most like home to us. As we began seeing houses we both began making lists of things we wanted or had to have in our first home.

I was and continue to be adamant about getting some sort of tech-recreational room. When I’m not working and I’m not with my wife there’s nothing I enjoy more than a rousing video game, television, or good movie. Though we enjoy most of the same things, she doesn’t always want to partake in the same things I do. As hard as I have worked for the new home, I figured that a “man” room was in order.

My wife posed no opposition to such a room or requirement though she did present her own. Originally she has wanted a swimming pool but has recently decided that she’s like the home to have something that will allow her to tend to an indoor garden complete with grow lights and ready to plant soil. She has always enjoyed growing her own flora and a variety of vegetables as well.

Aside from those two life-size requests we also found ourselves nitpicking things in each of the homes we saw and continue to see. The entire process has quickly become overwhelming. I’m not sure if it’s because of the amount of money we are prepared to spend on this home or if it’s just personal desires but none of the homes we’ve seen feel like they’re “our” home yet. Moving around a lot as a young child I can remember some homes feeling like “home” while others did not. We’re both looking for that certain something again, with our first home.

Some of these houses have great living rooms but no den. Others still have fantastic kitchen and dining areas but the living rooms and/or bedrooms have been to awkward or small. We’ve also seen several homes that don’t have gardening areas and a few that have had no large guest room that I could turn into my private entertainment headquarters. Many of the homes we’ve viewed thus far have all had something we fell in love with but found out rather quickly that we were often dealing with a double edged sword.

House hunting is one of those things in life you think will be easy but in actuality it turns out to be a bewildering experience. Mind you we have yet to become frustrated or overwhelmed, we are simply surprised at just how picky we’ve suddenly become. Before we went out viewing homes we thought we knew what we want and where prepared to find the perfect home in a short matter of time. We still look forward to seeing each home on our list but we are both starting to realize that we may have to make some compromises as there is no perfect home out there.

We have taken this advice from our real estate agent and it’s actually improved the experience to some degree but it’s hard to make compromises when you know you’re signing your life away. My wife however is much better at compromising which is also helping to keep my expectations of a new home in reality. For those thinking of or beginning to look for their first home be prepared to find something you don’t like in almost every home you see. You’ll also need to be prepared to have a give and take mentality. Doing so will make the process exciting and keep things positive.

A Sporting Expirience

When I was a young child my father introduced me to the world of sports. Watching the NBA and the NFL became not just a sports event but a father and son event as well. My father was an extremely busy man holding the fort down with two jobs but he was always home on Sundays for football and made sure he either took time off for Lakers games or would have the VCR set to record a game so that we could watch it together upon his return home.

My father always made sure that we made the most of these days and went all out with food and drink and sometimes would invite my friends and their parents over for festivities as well. In addition to that my father was that guy most of us know or have heard of, you know that guy that holds huge parties for championship games, namely the Super Bowl and the NBA finals. During these events my we pulled out all the stops complete with decorations throughout the home and my father would often have food catered or hire someone to do some serious Barbequing.

I have been more reminiscent and nostalgic of these times I spent with my father because my son is now at an age where he has began to take a interest in sports. In part this may be due to the fact that many of his acquaintances and friends are already football fans but it may also have to do with the fact that I still don’t miss an NFL game, nor do I miss any Lakers games. Of course my father is still with us and while we don’t get to watch every game together anymore we still manage to make time for getting together during the playoff’s and the occasional post game phone call.

It was in fact during this last call I had with my father I informed him that his grandson had taken a liking to sports and that he’d asked for a couple of NFL Jerseys & Apparel for his 12th birthday. “Grandpa” was excited by this news and said he’d like to help out with that request and would also like to begin coming over on Sunday’s again once football season starts up at the end of summer. Both my son and I thought this was a fantastic idea and I’ll admit, made me feel like a boy myself again. It’s almost an overwhelming feeling when I think of how much fun and bonding there will be during the games we will be watching together and I know my son is equally to spend time with both his father and Grandfather at the same time.

Though my son has shown interest in the NFL he’s just begun to ask questions about basketball and I’ve actually recommended that my father purchase an NFL Jersey for my son’s birthday and I’ll take care of the NBA Jerseys & Apparel. This should help push him in the right direction though as a Lakers fan, I can only hope he holds the same allegiances to the teams I route for. Should he end up supporting teams my father and I don’t I know this will be an experience for him that lasts a lifetime.

So no we play the waiting game. Football begins at the end of summer and my father will have retired by that time allowing him more time to spend as he sees fit and I know he’ll be here each weekend. In addition to that I’m not sure who I’m more excited for, my son and the memories this will leave with him or myself for helping to create the same great memories I have, for my son. One thing is certain however. No longer will we be squinting at a 19 inch television from our recliners and the couch. Games in High Definition and Surround Sound will make this all the more enjoyable.

Automation: An Ingrediant of Success

As is normal in the world of computers things change rapidly and there’s always a bigger, better piece of software or hardware waiting in the shadows patiently for its chance to dethrone current technology. This is perhaps even truer when dealing with technologies surrounding networks. Though it’s been in existence for some time aspects of IT automation are just beginning to take foot within businesses.

When it first began to make it’s rounds in the business world, IT Automation was extremely expensive to have implemented and the technology was in an obviously unproven state. As time went by and the technology advanced more businesses began to take notice and begin implementing things like Run Book Automation and ITIL automation. These businesses quickly discovered that implementation of such things freed up not just network resources but human resources as well.

Prior to implementation the majority of businesses whom relied on their networks for business were frequently forced to dedicate one or two individuals to a network for the sole purpose of tracking down bugs and then manually create patches for those problems. This naturally consumed payroll and did not allow talented individuals to assist in the creation of new applications, perform alpha and beta testing, and even keep things running smooth for those in the company who used a computer. As it became known that automation would free up these types of resources and allow the network to patch itself this technology really began to garner attention from businesses that may have once been apprehensive about adopting a new technology.

These days the majority of companies be them small or large have implemented some type of automation. Some have begun to use services like ITIL Management while others still have gone to full automation and streamlined their IT staff considerably, saving their company both money and time. In fact those companies who do not plan to automate to even a small degree should take heed and learn from those who’ve already chosen that path. Data Center Automation has become such a powerful tool that those that choose not to automate often find themselves struggling to keep applications online and running properly and generally have no choice but to employ an unnecessarily large IT staff. In many cases these companies have failed and are no more however it’s never to late to begin the automation process.

As with all things once it approaches commodity status and is no longer the new thing prices drop, healthy competition takes root, and there are endless choices both in terms of services and cost for entrepreneurs and IT professionals to consider. Most experts predict that the majority of networks will be completely autonomous by 2016 and while that’s difficult to argue, it may happen much sooner should the technology continue on the road it’s on.

Titanium Rings: A New Choice

There is much that can be said about men’s wedding bands. While some comments are negative more and more it is becoming commonplace to hear men not only compliment wedding bands worn by other men but also to look forward to choosing their own band. This shift in opinion can most likely be attributed to the introduction of new metals into the fray, such as Tungsten, and even Titanium.

Titanium rings have really taken the world of wedding bands by storm over the last few years due in part to being budget friendly though the majority of men enjoy these rings simply because they don’t look like other rings. Gold, Sliver, and Diamond rings made for men tend to all look similar and possess similar designs all of which look old fashioned to many men. Other men have also claimed that most men’s wedding bands fall short of looking masculine which has also helped titanium rings become so popular.

Most men are overly and pleasantly surprised at just how original many of the designs are when viewing titanium rings for the first time. Not only do wedding bands made of titanium come in different colors but one may find rings that boast multiple colors on a single ring. In addition to this the majority of titanium rings have creative patterns or markings etched onto the ring, adding a bit of je ne c'est quoi to the band that will often prompt others to ask “what type of ring is that you’re wearing.”

As previously mentioned, titanium rings also carry a much friendlier price tag than do those of a more contemporary or traditional nature. Young couples, especially grooms who have find themselves with a small and strict wedding budget may want to consider looking at titanium as an alternative to other metals as this is a fantastic way to save a few dollars. Almost every major jewelry chain and private vendor offers titanium wedding bands so finding one that appeals to you should pose no problem.

As previously mentioned there is another excellent unconventional choice one can make when considering wedding bands, that choice being Tungsten. Tungsten rings share a number of similarities with titanium rings, primarily cost and style. Tungsten rings can be found mocking gold and bright silver in color and are equally as stunning in their native somber silver coloring. Wedding bands made of Tungsten also boast many unique designs and can include custom etchings, and stylish rigid designs to create a unique look for those looking for something different.

Regardless of whether your budget be small or large it would be foolish to overlook Tungsten and titanium rings as possible candidates for wedding bands. Many have called titanium the new gold while others have referred to “man’s diamond”. Selecting either one of these metals for your wedding band will open up the doors of choice and options, will save you money, and leave you with a stylish and unconventional looking ring.

Men's Wedding Bands: The Titanium Age

It is fairly common for men to play a secondary role when planning for their wedding. It’s even more commonplace to see these same men in an unexcited state when it comes to wearing a wedding band. Being a married man I can attest to this because at that time and prior to my engagement I loathed wearing any type of jewelry. Mind you most men have no problem letting others know they’re off the market, however the choices for Mens Wedding Bands has traditionally been very limited and somewhat unappealing which has caused a majority of men to cringe at these choices.

As the pendulum swings both ways, and as doors open and close, opinions have changed dramatically in the past few years regarding men’s wedding bands. I believe this change can be attributed mainly to the new, classier selection of wedding bands available and even to the more affordable choices being offered.

Leading the charge in this change of opinions are Titanium wedding rings. Though they are available for both brides and grooms Titanium rings are immensely popular with men for two big reasons, price and stylish presentation. Titanium wedding bands boast a unique look that men wont find in the more traditional gold, silver, and even diamond rings. In addition to that the cost of these types of rings allows those who are budget conscience to dedicate a little extra to the wedding as prices are generally much more affordable when compared to more traditional rings.

Another popular choice for alternative men’s wedding bands is Tungsten. Tungsten offers up many of the same things Titanium does in terms of affordability, attractiveness and boast many different designs that aren’t found in traditional rings. These newer metals have allowed many men who would have never considered wearing a wedding band to be comfortable with a stylish ring. Other men who may have just not cared much for sliver, gold, and diamond now have several alternatives that come not just in different colors but styles that can be considered more “manly”.

So which ring did I settle on? Well initially I was unimpressed with all of the rings my then fiancée and I viewed and as I was not the type of male to wear any type of jewelry I tried to convince her to allow me to remain ring free. She is a more traditional type of person than I, and I was talked into taking a look at some alternative choices for men's wedding bands. I saw Tungsten and Titanium and ended up going with the latter as I found a solid black Titanium ring that fit both my personal style of dress and sense of humor perfectly.

Two Factor Authentication

These days spending time online can be dangerous regardless of whether you’re a private individual checking things out at home or the proprietor of a business. Admittedly there is more potential danger and loss to be had by a business who operates a network that stores client and business sensitive data. If this same company also has employees using the internet and email for any reason this opens the network and your data to even bigger and more damaging threats.

Danger has always lurked just around the corner for those who enjoy spending time online and since the inception of the Internet there have been various companies out to prove that they provide the very best in online security both for businesses as well as for the private sector. As someone who’s been using the Internet for the better part of fifteen years I can tell you that there are very good, middle of the road and very bad security programs available through different vendors.

The one portion of online security I find disconcerting however is the oversight many of the larger publishers have when dealing with the common computer user. The typical computer owner knows how to do little more than open a browser and peruse a few favorite websites. With the majority of people falling into this category I often wonder why security programs are continually churned out that are overly difficult to use, have poor interfaces, or require extensive computer knowledge to use. Businesses really aren’t affected by this however as they hire knowledgeable professionals who come to work already educated about such things.

Having spent the last couple of weeks researching online security programs I came across Two Factor Authentication which in layman’s terms ups your online security and protects valuable and private data by using a digital fingerprinting system to determine what is and isn’t safe and/or legitimate for you and any business who might use such security. This type of security can keep those individuals interested in practicing unscrupulous activities from doing so which in turn keeps valuable information safe.

Interestingly enough a few of the companies I looked into offered Two Factor Authentication services that required no tokens and required no installation of additional servers. I can see this as a big selling point for those businesses who might be interested in keeping their sensitive materials out of hands that might do harm, such as a man-in-the-middle looking to pull off phishing attacks. I was further surprised to find that some companies offer this type of security making use of retinal scans though I found these to be much more expensive than those utilizing fingerprints and the like.

So just how much security do you need? That’s actually a matter of how big your business is and how many people have access to the data and equipment you want protected. Should everyone with access actually have those privileges or do they have access simply because you don’t have the time to implement these types of security features? There’s no price you can put on security and peace of mind so those of you who may not have yet to look into Two Factor Authentication security should do so.

Why Dress Your Pet?

Many of us have been pet owners at some point during our lives. Bringing a pet into a home can generate both extra love and excitement within the house and for children the experience is an even bigger event, especially if it’s their first pet. Arguably the most popular family pet throughout the world is the dog. Everyone in my circle of friends and family has owned a dog at some point and a few have taken things one step further by dressing their lovable purebreds and mutts in Dog Clothes.

As a lover of dogs myself and having owned several both as a child and as an adult I’ve gone to great lengths to ensure my dogs have lived comfortable and healthy lives but I’ve never quite gone so far as to put a sweater on any of my furry friends or tied bows on the tops of their heads. Mind you I have nothing against this type of adoration for pets though I’ve never quite understood the desire or need to do such a thing.

I wanted to find out more about this phenomenon so I went to see my group of friends who regularly engage in such activities. My goal was to find out if there was something I was missing and to be quite frank, I didn’t expect to learn anything new about dressing a pet. So what did I find out? Let’s take a look.

I met my four close friends at a local restaurant to begin discussing Dog Clothes and the many reasons they all enjoyed putting their pet into such things. I had apparently overlooked a few key motivations, the first and most important being the need to dress pets to keep them warm in the winter. All but one of my confidants stated that this was their primary reason behind the decision to begin dressing their dogs. It is of interesting note too that all four of these individuals own small dogs so keeping their pet warm seemed logical considering their dogs have little hair in most cases and no hair in another.

Aside from keeping their K9 friends warm in the long winter months, they all stated that they dressed these pets in Dog Clothes for no other reason that to make the dogs look good. I’ll admit that I had associated those who dress pets in pet clothes with a certain stereotypical type of pet owner but as I found rather quickly there were many different types of Dog Clothes and many of the vendors offer a wide variety of styles and sizes, which shattered my perception of the typical dog sweater scenario. Though I visit all of these people on a regular basis, on average we don’t normally meet at our homes so I don’t see the dogs to often, so my friends where kind enough to bring pictures to this meeting. The pictures did reveal several interesting get up’s for pets which surprised me.

At the end of our rendezvous I found myself interested in looking further into this subject and was further astonished to find myself considering the purchase of several different sets of Dog Clothes for my Yellow Lab. Dog Clothes and the people who dressed their pets in such things really baffled me prior to learning more about it and seeing outfits other than sweaters really opened my mind to the possibility of buying something for my dog. It’s been just over four months now and am at present the owner of five outfits that I dress my Dog in anytime I take her out for a walk or run through the neighborhood.

An Education in IT

Though it’s not exactly new, Data Center Automation is sweeping through the world of IT Automation and is changing not only the way networks and their data are managed but is freeing up network resources as well as man power. Of course with the implementation of IT Automation comes many a benefit for companies large and small. As a long time computer user I wanted to know a lot more about this process so I decided to speak with a few key individuals.

After having spoken with several different heads of IT departments and teams it became very obvious very quickly that not only is data managed more efficiently but networks incorporating such things as runbook automation and itil service management find that their networks have fewer recourses being eaten up by processor and memory consuming tasks. This then leads to a faster and more secure network and allows programs dependant on a network to work faster and have less down time.

One of the gentlemen I spoke with early on in my research told me that putting IT Automation into practice equates to “showing an individual who is struggling with his/her workload how to manage their time and resources better and get the work done properly and out on time” Though I know only the basics of IT but as someone who’s quite competent with computers this explanation really made it clear just how automation works and how much good it has brought about for those companies whom rely on their networks heavily for both organization and for their day to day business.

I was also quite shocked to find that once automation takes root within a company many IT professionals who where once used to chase bugs and holes in the network where now being given more meaningful and productive tasks such as programming new proprietary software, alpha and beta testing, and many other duties that serve their companies in more dynamic means than they used to. Of the four individuals I spoke with, only one made little to no emphasis on this particular benefit. The other three touted this as the sole motive behind the decision to automate parts of their network. As a former business owner I can see just how motivating something like that would be too as making an employee more productive and efficient always helps the bottom line.

The one thing that all four of these gentlemen stressed however was just how important it is to spend time researching services and programs before any decisions are made. I was given one example of an ex employer who had rushed into and through the automation process only to find the services they had opted for delivered either to much or to little in the areas of need and therefore created a situation that created more problems for the network than it solved. There was further emphasis on research and planning as a lack of detail in those phases can help to speed a company to its demise in worst case scenarios.

So what have I learned through my inquiries with these four people? Well, I certainly have better understanding of the benefits automation carries with it and I now can say I understand why it’s taking businesses by storm and quickly becoming commonplace. It was also made clear how automation can hurt an unprepared and negligent company when care isn’t taken in the early stages. My new understanding of IT automation really leads me to believe that in just a few short years data center automation will be part of every business both small and large and will give companies an opportunity to fine tune their networks and the teams they employ to run them. The world of IT can at time be challenging and overbearing but opting for things like itil service management and even exin services can positively push the boundaries of your IT department.

Pellet Guns A Collectors Opinion

There are many arguments for and against gun control in this country and with so many misusing firearms it’s not hard to understand the position of those in favor of more control or banning and those who wish to see the owning of guns remain a choice that individuals make and not the government. I generally consider myself a fairly liberal person and while I believe there are always stronger ways to keep guns out of the hands of people who would use them improperly and to do other harm, I also believe that removing guns from society all together will only force immoral individuals to find another weapon with which to threaten us with.

In addition to traditional firearms, there has been a lot of attention of other types of non lethal guns such as pellet guns. As a long time collector and admirer of pellet rifles and air soft guns I find it unfortunate that there are individuals who make use of blank guns and other type of bb and pellet guns to threaten and even harm innocent people. Some of these guns look like actual firearms and in some cases are designed be an exact replica of their more deadly cousins. I think it unfair to lay blame on these guns or any type of gun, lethal in force or not because it’s not the gun that hurt anyone, it’s the person who pulled the trigger. Though any type of gun can be dangerous in the hands of irresponsible, angry, or immature persons, to remove firearms and even pellet guns is akin to placing a band-aid on top of a gaping wound. It solves nothing and those who used guns to do harm in the past will only find a new weapon of choice to use against innocents.

It is all too common a practice these days for people to look for and find a scapegoat and/or a quick solution. We as human beings should look at the tragedies caused by those with guns and realize that this is a human problem and not lay blame on an inanimate object. There are many physiological factors that contribute to a person being able to harm another human being and those are the things we should be looking at. This is where we should be attacking the problem because as I’ve stated before, even if we were to ban every single non-living object in the world, those with the ability to harm, maim, or even kill would still have feet and fists. As a society we should attempt to determine what motivates a person to commit such heinous acts and find ways of stopping this. I’m also a realist however and am well aware that there will likely never be a way to completely or even largely eradicate this type of behavior but we have a responsibility to try.

Recently I have had neighbors frown on me for allowing my teenage son to shoot pellet rifles in our back yard. Comments such as “how can you allow a child to shoot a gun” and “that’s irresponsible” reverberate throughout my front yard on a nearly daily basis. Sadly the majority of these people hold this position only because of what they see on the news or read in the paper. When it comes to guns, even air soft guns, it’s a case of a few bad apples ruining the barrel. I grew up shooting pellet guns with my dad and I like once did with me, have instilled responsibility and safety in my son before anything else. I grew up shooting and have not one time ever thought of using any of my guns for anything but target practice in my back yard or out in the mountains. I’m a well adjusted adult and I believe my son will one day be as well.

The bottom line with any type of gun is this. There are those of us who enjoy collecting and shooting for recreation. We are responsible, level headed people who know right from wrong and would never harm anyone or anything using any type of weapon. There are also those who will attempt to harm others out of frustration, immaturity, fear, revenge, etc. Sadly these people will find a way to do harm whether guns of any type exist or not. We can reduce the number of injuries though through education and responsibility and playing it safe can make shooting a lot of fun.
